The Lupercalia, Venus, Valentines and Vampires

Once upon a time there was a fertility festival called The Lupercalia. Men in wolf masks ran about the streets of Rome, and, in honour of the fertility god Lupercus, and in memory of the she-wolf who suckled Romulus and Remus, would symbolically thrash (lightly touching) any women they met of child-bearing age. Any woman not wanting to be fertile had better stay indoors. But some would deliberately loiter in the streets, hoping to encounter the wolf men.

Later, Christianity claimed the festival originally held on February 15th, renaming it in memory of Valentine, a Christian physician who was beheaded in Rome after doing many a good turn to other people, including the daughter of his jailer, whom he apparently cured of blindness. The violent death of a well-disposed person on religious grounds. What could be more romantic? Another account tells us he was a priest who was conducting illegal marriages, at a time when Claudius 11 did not want military men to marry, because it deterred them from seeking active service overseas. This story makes more sense.

Valentine’s Day is nowadays an uber commercial-fest, but, still, it serves to remind us, if we ever needed a reminder, of the eternal power of that magical experience of the human condition – ‘that ol’ Devil called Love’.

The Devil card however, more truly speaks of infatuation than love. The Devil card in the Tarot speaks of passions and powerlessness. It betokens entrapment, frustration, and the urgent need to break free, even if the wish to escape is not there.

Scorpio gets the rap -or the credit-for all things sexy. But The Devil card of Capricorn also represents the nature god Pan, and the imperatives of our most earthy animal nature. And it is mighty powerful. In terms of human body chemistry, sexual passion might as well be regarded as an addiction.

The Energy of The Devil card

I have more than once encountered the experience of what we might term a psychic vampire, in my professional reading work. One such reading left me so physically drained I had to go straight to bed afterwards, where I slept like a stone all night, but not in a good way, feeling slightly unwell.

It stands to reason. The Devil is fear, and people can be very upset and worried when they come for reading. Sometimes this fear or worry is palpable. And so is obsession.

The client was a very pleasant person to read for, but she was struggling with ‘the ol’ Devil’ all right. She wanted another man but he was married. So was the lady. Her husband brought her to the reading to make sure she would be safe, and that I was who I said I was. Then he left and later returned to take her home.

This was an agreeable, congenial, good looking and glamorous lady, and I could tell from the cards that the other man in question had powerful charisma. Then I had a bolt from the blue, an outright ‘psychic’ moment, and I saw a picture of the man in my mind’s eye. I told the lady who I was ‘seeing’, and asked if this was the person we were discussing. This man was a well known circus and stage performer.

The lady was extremely shocked that I correctly guessed his identity. And so was I, actually. But so it goes sometimes. She said to me, rather sharply, “you know him!”

I did not.  I had never met him. and I knew nobody else who knew him. But he had a public profile, and all at once, looking down at my cards, I seemed to ‘see’ him standing behind her, looking out over her shoulder. These things happen every now and then, though I know readers far more clairvoyant than I am.

Would she get to be with this man for keeps? This was what the lady wanted to know. I felt she might get a taste of what she was hoping for. She might get a little more time with this man. But if she did, I had to tell her I could see no ‘happy ending.’ Sometimes, rightly or wrongly, we can only say what we do not see.

I hope she got free of this unhappy situation one way or another and was happy. But I doubt it. That man moved away to the U.S, to Las Vegas. I found that out because she must have given him my number. One day I got a call from the States from this man, using a different name, saying he “had heard about me, and he wanted to know his future.”

I didn’t let on that I knew who he really was, although his accent was an immediate alert. But I declined to do a reading then and there, just like that over the telephone, and recommended he find a local reader. It’s funny sometimes, how some people will deliberately mislead or misdirect a reader, but still expect to receive accurate feedback. If we can deliver that, then we can also see they are not playing straight with us, and no-one likes to feel they are being made a monkey of.

It is another curious thing, that often there will be a succession of readings all dealing with the same card as their main focus. It is almost as if The Everything is setting homework for the reader. The Devil turned up in the following three readings, and in each one we also drew the Moon card, signifying hunting, fantasy, dreams, emotional extremes. Obsession. Illusion.

In each case, some poor soul was having a desperately unhappy time, struggling to let go of a romantic relationship, though they had decided that they must. They no longer felt wanted or respected, or welcome.

One such client was now in danger of starting to behave like a stalker, and I had to warn them against certain behaviours, although on none of these subsequent three occasions did I feel quite the same physical impact of the ‘show biz’ client.

Perhaps this was physical impact was only to be expected.  A showbiz  sized energy field is likely to carry a highly charged aura, to be anticipated in such readings, and when we talk about a vampire in real life, this is what we’re talking about. A habit, an encounter or a situation that can physically utterly drain your batteries on contact.

The Devil card drawn upside down or  Ill-Dignified, is usually better for being drawn upside-down, as this tends to say the worst is over, denoting clarity and self control, which is to say, liberation and the recovery of our equilibrium and the reclaiming of our personal sovereignty.

If you need to move on from a damaging personal relationship or a habit that’s proving harmful, this card is an encouraging sign when drawn reversed.

The Devil card is known, with justice, for its powerful negative aspects. It speaks of fear, frustration, anger, unhealthy habits, obsession and addiction, and the evil that can ensue from these things. Usually, the situation that it’s referring to could do with overturning.

The tough news is that it’s going to have to be us that overturns it. No-one else can do it. It is simply not in their power. Possibly too, there is no real solution as yet, and the situation meantime can only be managed or endured.  Now it is a case of damage limitation.

But The Devil isn’t all bad.

As an image of Pan, god of all wild creatures, rather than in its guise as Christianity’s Devil, this beastly card is still strong stuff, requiring careful handling.

But this is the power and the glory of Cardinal Earth. And the animals, however “red in tooth and claw”, are ultimately innocent.

The Devil can be one heck of a sexy beast. It is charisma. It is the drive and passion to create. It is our connection to our roots in earth and our general animal vitality – (steady tiger!) –  a strong glue for keeping relationships together over the long haul. And as they say, a little of what you fancy does you good.

The anger of The Devil comes in handy, is downright necessary, when you find yourself dealing with disrespect or downright nastiness.  Let that Devil look out of your eyes, as you politely say ‘Excuse me?’

Subtext.  ‘You better back off.’

If your inner Devil can clear some cr*p out of your space, there’s nothing the matter with that. Let him off the leash.

No. The Devil is not all bad. The challenge is to keep him in his place and not feed him too often. Just watch for the signs and make sure it’s your devil, or your cheeky imp, that’s under control, locked up inside that cage.

And not you.

Meantime, Venus, the planet of love, beauty, luxury, fashion and finance leaves behind our friend Pan, The Devil of Capricorn, and meet up with Pluto in Aquarius today or tomorrow depending where you are in the world. The dates for this transit are February 16 to March 11.

Venus needs a bit of fresh air. She loves you. She loves everyone, but at a bit of a distance. Lucky colours for a bit of added Venus power during this transit: white and soft silver, hot cobalt blues, soft shades of lavender and aqua.

Endings and Fresh Starts

It is a waning moon, not a time for sowing and planting. We are haunted, maybe grieving. Dreams are vivid. Today’s waning moon is in the fixed water sign of Scorpio, denoting a strong outgoing tide of deep feeling with a sting of loss attached but we may also experience a sense of irritation, not quite knowing where to put our physical, intellectual and emotional energy.

The Death card, curiously, is the card corresponding with the zodiac sun sign of Scorpio. The appearance of this card signifies endings. Many readers these days will state that the Death card never, but never represents an actual death or bereavement. My twenty odd years of reading for other people tells me that in general, the Death card is talking metaphorically. A job may come to an end, or a relationship for instance. But it can raise the question or the spectre of an actual human death. Oh yes it can, it will and it does. And so it should. Death is part of Life. It colours our experience of Life through the awareness of our own mortality and that of all those we love most. Death – and Birth are THE greatest life events, our own. The Death card needs handling with care. I do not make predictions of Death. I could be wrong. Nor will I avoid the conversation.

The appearance of the Death card reflects the dreadful events we are seeing on the news, if we are not living through them ourselves. And the Death card shows that we are feeling acutely aware of the passage of time, and of our own mortality. Time and tide wait for no man. Oh, do they not? I have known when loved ones were about to go. I do not mean that I was sensing anything imminently. But it was there all the same. Their tide was on the turn for the last time. There was a presentiment. An ebbing tide, pulling at my own inner water.

And yet the appearance of the Page of the element of Earth is timely. Mercury has now gone direct again, while energetic Mars has entered pragmatic Capricorn on 4 January and stays there till 13 February. The echoes of recent troubles may be powerful, yet this new wind may still prove favourable. Hold fast to the greatest tasks in hand…we have been stuck, but now necessary things can and should and will get done.

We are now in the second decan of Capricorn, associated with the creative and productive Three of Coins or Pentacles. This card, again from The Touchstone Tarot shows a master craftsman at work. See the sketch and quill behind him. An eager patron looks on, agog to see what beauty shall be created, proudly sponsored by him. Oh yes, he gets to claim much kudos. This is the card of making a house a home, but above all it is a card of excellence.

This is a good time to surge ahead with creative projects and businesses. A Tamil friend has a silk weaving business for instance, making sarees/saris. The Three of Coins is an apposite card for ant kind of business like this.

A medicine for grief -or anxiety is to do something constructive, creative or useful. Sort your admin (yawn -but it feels so good once you’ve done it.)

Or read and study. Learn something new.

DO something. This is a medicine, a reliable Ju-ju for blasting the cobwebs or soothing sorrow. Action in the material world. Anything really, so long as it ain’t stupid. The young man representing the Page of Coins is a scholar (from an original painting by Hans Holbein. He could equally be a crafts-person or a cook or a pet owner.

When we are treading water, or right up in our heads, we can earth ourselves by going for a walk, feeding the birds, or by giving our mind and our hands something to work on front of house.

This day of a legalistic waning Libra moon we learn that the next UK election will not be in the spring as has been lately rumoured, but will be in the second half of the year.

The UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is a Taurus sun sign native, and the leader of the Opposition Keir Starmer is a Virgo sun sign native. Is Rishi waiting until after late May when Jupiter will move into Gemini, or will he wait until the 2 October eclipse in judicial, contractual Libra to call the election?

There is plenty good about Jupiter in Gemini for communications, publishing, teaching, aviation…but Jupiter is in detriment in Gemini, meaning that when it is in Gemini, Jupiter is sitting opposite Sagittarius, the sign it naturally rules. What this can mean is that we have super intelligent decision making during Jupiter in Gemini, or a load of flopping about, quibbling and hot air and nothing of great moment actually gets decided.

Globally, we are witnessing such dreadful devastation. Mars in Capricorn seeks to acquire- territory, resources, status. But it also seeks, like the Page of Coins or Pentacles, to rebuild.

Resolutions and rebuilding in Gaza and Ukraine can’t- and won’t come fast enough to satisfy any ideals of justice, kindness or basic decency. It never does until that last moment has long, long since passed. Those tides have gone right out, and are coming in again as tsunamis- “waves in the harbour”. I write this, realizing that I am speaking metaphorically in the very same week that Japan has experienced earthquakes and tsunamis on the very first day of 2024.

“As above so below.” The planet Earth, Gaia is unsettled, and so are we. The hive is rattled. The bees swarm, buzzing. We are experiencing Solar Cycle 25 and all that. This was expected to be a weak cycle in terms of solar flare activity. And maybe it will still be weaker than the average solar cycle. But it is early days in this cycle, and it is already proving stronger than was predicted back in 2019, with the next solar maximum expected any time between now and October 2024.

The stone associated with Capricorn is the garnet, symbolic of loyalty and devotion, The garnet is considered a lucky talisman of protection, and for the health of the heart.

The Lady and the Lion. Perhaps it is Una. Or perhaps her name is Leona or Leonora, for the lion is also the lioness. Her hold on the leash could not be lighter. She is controlling the lion, but only because it is allowing it, not fighting her restraint, signifying that the lion is also a part of herself. This is just as one would imagine, a welcome card of better health, signifying recovery if someone has been ill.

Astronomy

Leo is one of the 48 constellations described by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy, and one of the 88 modern constellations recognised by NASA today, between the neighbouring constellations of Cancer to the west and Virgo to the east.

Leo is the 12th largest constellations, and one of the most easily recognizable due to its many bright stars, and a distinctive shape suggesting a crouching lion, apparently facing right.

The bright light in the sky beneath Leo as seen in the photo below is Jupiter.

The best time to see the Lion is in Spring in the northern hemisphere, from around the March equinox. In early April, the constellation Leo reaches its high point for the night around 10 p.m. By around May 1, Leo reaches his high point for the night around 8 p.m. local time  In early May, the Lion begins to set in the west around 2 a.m. local time and by June, Leo is descending in the west in the evening, drifting progressively westward.

By late July and into early August, the Lion is beginning to fade into the sunset, returning to the eastern sky and visible before dawn around late September or October.

Look out for the Big Dipper, Leo is below it. You are looking for a backwards question mark pattern called the Sickle; and you can see its curve outlines the Lion’s mane.

Leo’s brightest star, Regulus, or Alpha Leonis, ‘The King Star,’ is the heart of the celestial lion, a sparkling blue-white star at the bottom of the backwards question mark pattern. Regulus means “little king” or “prince” in Latin. The star’s Greek name, Basiliscos, has the same meaning, while the Arabic name is Qalb al-Asad, meaning literally “the heart of the lion.”

Leo’s fifth largest star, Epsilon Leonis, 247 light years from Earth, is 288 times more luminous than the Sun, four times as massive and has 21 times the solar radius.

A triangle of stars in eastern Leo represents the Lion’s hindquarters and tail. The brightest star of the triangle is named Denebola, Arabic, meaning the Lion’s Tail.

There are 15 stars in Leo with 18 known planets between them, but none of the planets is in a habitable zone.

The Leonids are meteor showers associated with the constellation of Leo. They peak around November 17-18 every year, and there is another minor shower, the January Leonids, peaking January 1 – 7.

History & Mythology

Leo the Lion has since ancient times been associated with the sun and royalty, ruled by the sun in astrology and is one of the oldest constellations collectively recognized with many ancient civilizations agreeing on perceiving it as a lion.

Archaeological evidence suggests that Mesopotamians recognized a constellation similar to Leo as early as 4000 BC. The Persians knew the constellation as Shir or Ser, Babylonians called it UR.GU.LA (“the great lion”), Syrians knew it as Aryo, and the Turks as Artan.

The Lions of The Nile

The story goes that the ancient Egyptians venerated Leo because the overhead appearance of Leo once upon a time coincided with the annual flooding of the Nile River, the lifeblood of their agriculture- and therefore the nation entire.

Why once upon a time? The constellations as seen from Earth have moved over the millennia due to a 26 000 year cycle known as the precession of the equinoxes.

By the end of the drought, the desert lions were getting desperate and would come within sight of the city walls seeking water but this low point in the life of the lions was welcomed as a certain sign that the Nile floods were now shortly on their way. The Egyptians accordingly honoured the lion with festivals, and statues of lions can still be seen along the course of the Nile River, proof of their reverence.

It’s thought that the lion-headed fountains commonly designed by Greek and Roman architects equally symbolized the life-giving waters released by the sun’s presence in Leo.

Herakles and the Lion of Nemea

In Greek mythology, Herakles’ first labour was the killing of the Nemean Lion. This man eating lion lived in a cave just outside Nemea, a town south-west of Corinth. There had been a number of failed attempts to kill it, but these intrepid hunters had discovered- to their (terminal) horror- that nothing could pierce the lion’s hide, it was so preternaturally tough.

But someone must have survived to tell this tale, for Herakles was forewarned of this additional teensy problem, and sneaked up on the lion when it was asleep in his cave, where they fought and he strangled to death the uber-kitty.

Herakles then (rather disrespectfully, I can’t help feeling, if undeniably pragmatically) skinned the lion with its own claws, and wore its skin as a cloak, making himself even more ferocious in appearance, and more importantly, arrow-proof.

Astrology

Tarot cards: Strength and the Five, Six and Seven of Wands.

This fixed fire sign is known for its pride, ambition and determination, warmth and generosity of spirit, not to mention, charisma, but above all, Leo is known for bravery; the lionhearted one, the divine expression of physical, mental, and emotional fortitude, which is a very great virtue. Leo parents are typically devoted, but they rule their households, no question about it.

Courage takes many forms. There is the courage of initiative, the will to advance, engage and attack. There is moral courage, proceeding in the face of fear, “feeling the fear and doing it anyway.”

And there is the courage to endure, to withstand, and the fortitude that quietly says to itself, “I will keep smiling, and tomorrow I will try again”. No banners and no accolades.

Leo can be its own worst enemy; hasty, arrogant, reckless, self-centred, headstrong and careless, and for these reasons, unless these subjects learn patience, consideration and self-control, they are not necessarily always as lucky in life as they could be, or as the great-hearted Leo truly deserves, proud and thirsty children of the sun.

Incredible Putin Tarot prediction from Sun Sign School tutor Katie-Ellen Hazeldine at @truetarottales naming June 2023 and showing the ‘stab in the back’ Putin mentions in her cards.

The discussion on Twitter was in reference to Putin’s speech in the immediate aftermath of the Wagner mutiny and Prigozhin’s subsequent hasty relocation to Belarus, and the image in question was the Ten of Swords as shown below, from The Illuminati Tarot.

This card has been turning up for Vladimir Putin again and again since March 2022, and its work, one suspects, has only just begun.

Classically, the Ten of Swords signifies the end of the road; ruin, collapse, betrayal, (stab in the back) The Ten of Swords may also, in my own reading experience, denote health problems, including, but not limited to, migraines, strokes, neck problems, spinal issues and colo-rectal problems. I am not suggesting that Putin himself is dealing with such health issues. But I have seen this connection validated sufficiently often in real life, to be aware of the very real possibilities.

Vladimir Putin and Yevgeny Prigozhin. They go back a long way, these two, since the mid-nineties. But Mr Putin does not “do” sentiment. And as for loyalty, since when has this been a question of honour, or an reciprocal, equitable two-way street in the corridors of absolute power, any place, any time?

#Tarot 7 Swords=diplomacy/stealth…while I am not convinced all this was some carefully worked out master plan. 10 Wands=consequence of massive Wagner frustration with Russian high command but perhaps Putin/+Lukashenko see another use for Prigozhin based in Belarus-closer to Kyiv.

Here is another curiosity about the Seven of Swords for tarot students and aficionados. The suit of Swords represents the element of Air and of all things airborne. Here we have the seven of that suit, and Wagner’s forces have shot down six Russian military helicopters plus one military reconnaissance plane and killed their crews.

But why did Prigozhin launch this “protest march” as he called it? I asked the tarot and drew the Nine of Swords (also from the Legacy of the Divine Tarot deck.)

There is a sense here that the mutiny was genuine, at least at the beginning, and at ground level, and was born of Prigozhin’s exhaustion and frustration with the top brass in the Russian military. The Nine of Wands is classically soldier like, but here,it shows someone who is stuck in a rut and metaphorically (or literally as may have been the case here, “running out of ammo,” while the Seven of Swords suggests a situation in which Prigozhin no longer had a direct line of communication with Putin.

Perhaps he believed that his communications were being blocked or kicked into the long grass (or were being actively sabotaged?) by his supposed colleagues, comrades- or are they his rivals and “gatekeepers”- Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of Staff General Valery Gerasimov.

It has emerged since the mutiny and since these tweets that Prigozhin was planning to kidnap Shoigu and Gerasimov as they were travelling south (and do what with them exactly?) But then someone leaked his plot to the FSB. They changed their travel plans pronto, and Prigozhin changed tack and started the “protest march” towards Moscow

The Seven of Swords refers in particular to the arts of diplomacy, and to intelligence, strategies of stealth, surveillance, sabotage and the pre-emptive strike.

In a personal reading, it may be alerting you to watch out for a stalker or a scammer. Guard your personal intel. Change your passwords. Vary your routes and your routines.

Here, the Seven of Swords was also be picking up on the involvement of the FSB…former KGB.

But what threat from these two might Prigozhin have thought he was pre-empting by planning to abduct them? Telling lies about him to Putin? Telling truths about him to Putin, truths Putin would not like? Prigozhin said, apparently, that he “had scores to settle.”

It won’t be surprising to anyone, no cards needed, if there is another major development here in respect of Putin and Prigozhin and the Wagner situation during the first decan of Leo Season (because of that fiery – and imminent-Five of Wands) and if then there is a further follow up late October-late December 2023 (Death card =Scorpio, late Oct-late Nov and Temperance =Sagittarius, late November until 21 December.)

Meanwhile, people in Belarus are not happy to have the murderous Prigozhin there, at the potential beck and call of the execrable Lukashenko, even if it is true that Prigozhin is at this moment most miserably sequestered in a (windowless) hotel room, as reports suggest.

It is important to remember for students of Tarot, looking deeply into our cards may extend the reader’s “line of sight in extraordinary ways”. But the reader is only human and fallible. We are seeking to DIVINE what is hidden or obscure, but the variables are many and complex, and tarot deals in the detected/divined possibilities or probabilities, and not in certainties.

Do my cards show that Putin leaves power in Russia before Christmas 2023, whether by his own choice or by other means?

My cards are not clear on that point. Other tarot readers may feel differently and some eminent Western astrologers have divined the months of July-August 2023 as a very tricky time indeed for Putin in terms of internal power politics. We are all agreed there.

But Prigozhin’s rebellion, however short lived (and quietly supported by what shadowy figures in Putin’s orbit?) has exposed “something rotten” in the state of Putin’s empire. The events of June 2023 have unleashed a genie that is not going to fit back in the bottle.

One vedic astrologer has said that Putin will stay in power until 2030. I can’t see that, but have tended to feel that Putin could stay in power at least until the autumn months of 2024.

I have never written this up before, but one afternoon late last year, 2022, I was chatting online with a friend, astrologer Patrick Arundell, and he wondered what my cards had to say about the departure of Putin. He had his own analysis of course, and you can find a number of videos Patrick has made about Putin. But it is always interesting to talk to other practitioners, not just in our own disciplines, but in other disciplines. and while I am not an astrologer, still, there is a lot of astrology embedded in tarot cards.

I pulled cards one by one and laid them out in a line, each card representing a month of the year until eventually I saw the signal I was looking for and drew the Death card and the Ace of Swords.

These two cards are undeniably and clearly indicative of an ENDING, and no bones about it. But because of all the cards I had to draw before I got to this point, I have felt slightly more inclined to anticipate Putin’s final departure from power as likely later than sooner, between Scorpio season Oct 2024-Aquarius Season 2025 (based on that same stealthy Seven of Swords we talked about earlier.) This does not mean events won’t happen sooner. Maybe Scorpio 2023-Aquarius 2024.

The Ace of Swords has a suddenness about it. Putin’s departure may be very sudden when it finally comes to it, even if the situation has been a long time coming down the line. Timing with Tarot is a subtle business, generally less precise in terms of timing than astrology, and as ever, only time will tell.

But whatever the actual weather in Russia (and at his place in Sochi) Putin is clearly in for a hot and sticky summer, says the Five of Wands, the first decan card of Leo, and the ultimate card of in-fighting.

And the Ten of Swords says, whatever happens about Prigozhin, Putin has made a lot of enemies and he had better not keep his back turned…on anyone.

This of course, he already knows, which is why he is so cloistered away, deeply hidden away in his security bubble. But that brings its own problems and there is such a thing as a self fulfilling prophecy, and how did it happen, what happened to Indira Gandhi?

And cruel as Putin is, and desperate as we are, not only for the sake of the people of Ukraine- and Russia- but for the sake of all Europe, for the war to end in Ukraine, who would come after him? The likes of Alexei Navalny? How likely does that seem right now, even if Putin departs tomorrow? Especially if Putin departs tomorrow? But for now there seems good reason to be mindful of that wise old saying, be careful what you wish for.

Men in wolf masks ran about the streets of Rome, and in honour of the fertility god Lupercus and in memory of the she-wolf who suckled Romulus and Remus, would symbolically thrash (lightly touching) any women they met of child-bearing age. Any woman not wanting to be fertile had better stay indoors. But some would deliberately loiter in the streets, hoping to encounter the wolf men.

Later Christianity claimed the festival, originally held on February 15th, renaming it in memory of poor Valentine, a physician who was cruelly beheaded in Rome after doing many a good turn to other people, including the daughter of his jailer, whom he apparently cured of blindness.

Given the long rumbling tensions, and in the wake of recent further air incursions by China into Taiwanese air space, what does the Tarot and what does cartomancy with playing cards detect in respect of the likeliness of an attempted land invasion by China of Taiwan, 2023, 2024 and 2025?

Card One: The Hanging Man

The Hanged Man steps back, hangs back, takes time to think, weighs the cost. President Xi may personally yearn to make a decisive move, but deduces it is not a logical move at this time, and perhaps, while desirable, the cost may outweigh any future benefits, and is it even necessary?

Astrologically The Hanging Man or Hanged Man depending on the deck corresponds with the planet Neptune, watery, fathomless-lacking boundaries. It deals in dreams. The planetary rulers of the water sign Pisces are fiery Mars, its traditional ruler, but Neptune is its modern ruler. Where is the limit of our domain?

The Hanging Man does not indicate readiness for action. But should hostilities commence in the Strait of Taiwan in 2023, then a couple of timings to watch out could be during Pisces. Another window to watch could be during the transit of Mars in Cancer.

This starts right at the end of Pisces season, 25 March 2023-20 May 2023. Why might this be significant in real life events? Mars in Cancer symbolically translates as Mars/initiation/war/action) in Cancer/sea/early summer.

This may also refer to events in the Black Sea. ‘Fire at Sea.’

Card 2: The Ace of Swords reversed

The Ace of Swords is a card of decision, decisive action- or attack. This is an air suit card suitable to describe aircraft or aerial invasion or bombardment. It is also a card of stress, strife and issues to do with authority and control, as well as Information technology.

Drawn reversed, as it has been here, it appears to be reflecting the fact that President Xi has a lot on his plate at this time. Not least covid, civil unrest and Putin’s invasion of Ukraine which seems to be more of a nuisance for Xi than a green light to make any further moves on Taiwan.

In addition, while Europe has not so far put on a measured, carefully calibrated, costly but still, not particularly impressive show of unity or strength in supporting Ukraine against Putin’s total war- neither has the US- President Xi-despite his extensive intelligence networks- seems unsure as to the likely strength of military response from the US should China escalate aggression against Taiwan. Has the US really not got more Patriot missile systems to spare for Ukraine? Or is it doling them out sparingly, measured just sufficiently so as to prevent a Russian takeover in Ukraine, forcing Putin to expend evermore resources, while keeping its powder dry with a weather eye on China?

The Ace Swords, drawn in the central position, clearly reflects the stakes, and is confirming the issue under discussion. If we wre looking at the Ace Swords in the third, future position, the Tarot would be flagging up a possible yes answer, especially if it had been drawn upright.

Card 3: The Six of Cups

This is generally a peaceable card, but it does suggest that President Xi looks at Taiwan with a kind of nostalgia. That he genuinely believes it is a part of China, and is an asset that should come within China’s direct control. But he does not need to take this risk. China is consolidating its sphere of influence hegemony through ‘soft strategies,’ makings itself ‘local’ pretty much everywhere. Quietly. Barely noticed. The number 6 is a number of health, service, community and heritage.

This card of childhood seems to reflect an awareness of the youngest generation. China seems to be planning for a future in which there are fewer ‘young people.’

The population of China has more than doubled since the 1950s. The country was the first in the world to hit one billion people in 1980.

However, in 1979, in an attempt to control the burgeoning population, the infamous one-child policy was introduced, putting controls on how many children Chinese citizens could have.

While the government eventually recognized the negative implications of this policy, it appeared to be too little, too late. The two-child policy was introduced in 2016, but it has not yet reversed the current slowdown in population growth.

Nonetheless. The population of China currently stands c 1.44 billion, more than the populations of the US, Canada, South America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand-and then some. And population growth is slowing in these other regions. Read more HERE

The Six of Cups is usually anything but a warlike card. It has all the ease of a long summer afternoon.

However, it may be worth noting, the beautiful Six of Cups corresponds with the elemental quality of fixed water, and with the second decan of Scorpio 2-11 November. Mighty Scorpio, ruled by Mars and Pluto. The major cards that correlate with this minor card are The Sun and Death. The lower the sun, the longer the shadow, however golden the sunset.

This Sun card connection prompts me to observe that China, in watching Taiwan, does not forget its history with Japan. The United Kingdom, this day, has signed an historic Defence agreement with Japan, also a former ruler in Taiwan.

The playing cards below represent three spreads -three ‘Lines of Five’. The reader is asking, what is the likelihood of China invading Taiwan in 2023, 2024 and 2025?

China has plenty else to be getting on with.

Row 2 -2024

9 Diamonds/King Clubs/8 Spades/King Hearts/7 Spades

There are 2 King cards in this row. Do they represent Xi himself? The King of Business and Government is looking back at the 9 Diamond of 2023 with a degree of satisfaction. He has chalked up some economic success despite the challenges of covid. But then he hits a rock. Maybe it is a personal health issue. The 8 Spades can mean a hospital. Or maybe it is the public health bill in the aftermath of covid and now it is coming home to roost. Unless, God forbid, it is yet another covid lock-down in 2024.

The final card in the row, the 7 Spades, signifies temptation,frustration,surveillance, and sometimes espionage.

The 7 Spades is also the card that talks about diplomacy and national security. China may find during 2024 that there is a push back from other countries, who have become increasingly anxious that they have allowed China to invest too great a stake in their own national infrastructure.

The first card on this row, the 8 Diamonds denotes power, and a greater economic and social stability. China is rising. But will it be the same China we know right now? The central card, the 3 Spades denotes separation, loss, departure, sometimes death, suggesting that China may see a new leader before the end of 2025.

The second card, the 2 Clubs says it can unify business with Taiwan and in time, this will become a form of mutual governance.

This is the row with the most red suit cards. 3 red suit (yes) cards 2 black suit (no) cards. Likelihood of invasion of Taiwan detected as not highly likely, but somewhat more likely than in either 2023 or 2024.

What cards would most clearly indicate an outright military conflict? I am looking at the central card and also the last card on each of these 3 rows, to see the Ace Spades, Ace Wands, 2 Spades, 10 Spades or even The Joker drawn in either of these positions. None of these have appeared. The closes we’ve come is with the 3 Spades drawn in 2025.

None of which is to say there will be no invasion of Taiwan now or ever. But the signs are not there, indicative that China is ready or prepared to mount such an effort, and nor may it feel the need to, based on the way it sees the wheel turning. And what is its actual military capacity, actually, at this time? Even if it not averse to being seen to flex its muscles in a public invasion of Taiwan’s airspace.

Cartomancy and the contest for the new PM

Cartomancy is fortune-telling or divination using a deck of cards. Forms of cartomancy appeared soon after playing cards were first introduced into Europe in the 14th century. Practitioners of cartomancy are generally known as cartomancers, card readers, or simply readers. Wikipedia

A couple of people on Twitter had asked me to look at this contest for the new PM. Asking me to:

‘Please look at BJ’.

‘What do you see re PM?’

‘Will it go to the members?’

‘Will it be a General election?’

‘What about Graham Brady?’

Events have moved so fast, and I have been away this week, so that I have been posting quick fire readings over on there, and now, with the outcome expected to be announced shortly, am collating and reviewing them here.

I had better declare that I personally, have mixed feelings about this current situation, but am neither strongly pro nor strongly anti the idea of Rishi Sunak as PM though this recent making and unmaking of ‘kings’ does seem to have been conducted as a pretty mean and dirty business. But. That’s politics.

UPDATE Jeremy Hunt has today, 25 Oct, been reappointed as Chancellor of the Exchequer. I find this interesting in light of other things suggested by the cards, discussed further down the page.

#Cartomancy #Tarot is not about prediction as such but takes left field soundings on a given situation. eg Penny Mordaunt for PM? Line of 5 Ace Diamonds (New PM) 8 Hearts (=Pisces native) 6 Spades/10 Spades/Jack Spades She is sharp but 3/5 Dominance of Spades reads as prob no.

At the time of writing Penny Mordaunt is still in the running but with only 26 nominations. She is hoping that it will go to a member’s vote, and seems confident that if the Conservative party members are given a say, they will choose her over the favourite, Rishi Sunak.

This may be true, while looking highly unlikely. But this is to disregard the fate of Liz Truss who was basically, hounded out of post for a pro-inward investment fiscal policy which the parliamentary party then seized on, contrary to their own traditional fiscal ethos, invoking envy politics as the stick to beat her with, and most effectively.

Liz Truss’s prospects for survival as PM were already widely in doubt back in September. I was shown, rightly or wrongly, that her policy would have started to come good December-March 2023. The Ten of Pentacles showed major inward investment coming into the UK from overseas after the first quarter 2023 or even before. This was some new investment (and I recommend following Jefferson for this kind of news)

But I also ‘saw’ that Liz Truss was being watched by a ‘King of Diamonds’ – this, I think, must have been Jeremy Hunt, who would later be replacing Kwasi Kwarteng, and Rishi, quietly watching and waiting, having become almost invisible after losing the previous contest.

Sometimes one card will be doing two jobs, or saying two different things at the same time.

I had previously forecast here in another recent blog that Liz Truss would win that first contest with Rishi Sunak. I had drawn the Eight of Cups for Rishi, a card which shows someone walking away, off to new pastures.

Clearly, although that forecast was correct in terms of the immediate outcome, that he lost to Liz Truss, he did not wander far at all, but only went to sit in the barn the other side of the pasture, looking out with binoculars, and talking on walkie-talkies to ‘his’ people, dressed as farm workers and passing ramblers.

Plan A didn’t work.

Time for Plan B.

On a purely personal level, I was not especially pro-Truss. Why not? Lack of stature. But she never had a chance. The choice of Liz Truss was the party members revenge for Rishi’s alleged part in the coup against the elected PM.

Whether Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng’s policy would have delivered well for the UK given sufficient time for even half a chance, we can throw rotten potatoes all we like. We can only hypothesize. The markets rule the roost and we shall never know.

Penny Mordaunt will suffer a similar fate should she somehow break through on a members vote, though this is looking highly unlikely, and the cards indicated some days ago, that the new PM would not be Penny Mordaunt.

We will know very shortly if she gets the MP nominations sufficient for a members vote or if the cards showed me correctly on 21 October. (this written here 24 Oct 13:48)

This, despite the fact that the astrology at this time is favourable to her- Jupiter, planet of opportunity is returning to her natal sign of Pisces. She may yet be offered another senior role in Rishi’s new government.

These were cards drawn 4 h ago Top row, 5 cards=RS Bottom row, 5 cards= BJ. Extra 3 cards pulled for each for clarification. I asked, show any Ace for next PM. Drew Ace Hearts indicated RS. Joker on RS top row- this isn’t the end of the political road or of high office for BJ.

Cards for BJ stronger than 2 days ago but not ‘trumping’- overtaking cards for RS who draws Ace Hearts.

First I looked for Spades cards. Spades can be read as trouble or else as a ‘no’ answer, while discounting the fact that as a Gemini native, Boris Johnson may be personally represented as the air sign King of Spades, when the card is to be read as an entirely neutral personal significator.

Rishi is a Taurus subject, born 12 May 1980. He is a third decan Taurus therefore, famously suave and smooth of tongue. But co-ruled by Saturn, the most ambitious of the Taurus decans. His court card is The King of Clubs, but in his role as a ‘money man’ and former Chancellor of the Exchequer he is also a King of Diamonds.

Spades would help me eliminate one or the other. Neither of them drew Spades cards.

I looked next for Diamonds cards, positive and fast moving. Diamonds indicate a yes answer. Well, Rishi drew one, Boris drew three, including the Ace of Diamonds in his recent past- reflecting the fact that he was already previously PM. summer

It was a bit like looking for spikes on a graph. But these two graph lines were not sufficiently, acutely or tonally differentiated from one another apart from The Joker reversed. More about that in a minute.

Next I looked at the outcome cards.

Boris drew a card of new business, the Jack of Clubs. OK. Well, this is a good, solid action card, and the Jacks describe something new, young or small. Or else they may detect an offer. But the scale of this card was not indicative of anything so monumental as a re-selection to be Prime Minister. I’d have needed to see the Ace or the Ten.

Rishi drew the 3 of Diamonds. Well, that was hardly monumental either but…The THREE. Aha? I think back to that ‘team of three’ message I drew when looking at Jeremy Hunt as Chancellor.

So that’s it. Jeremy Hunt is a Scorpio in Scorpio season, just as we are heading to the eclipse in Scorpio 25 Oct. Steamy Mars energy. Scorpio is secretive, subtle. It can make an excellent spy or detective. He was acting as one of a team of three people working behind the scenes, steering towards this new outcome while at the same time serving as Chancellor for Liz Truss.

(And just confirmed, he is now reappointed as Chancellor for Rishi Sunak. Very smooth and to quote a key word from Rishi’s inaugural speech, how very ‘stable’.)

This is pure speculation of course. This is only cartomancy. But three out of five cards were threes, and that’s rather like the cards shouting, ‘look at this!’

There was something active in process back there. A three sided relationship between Liz Truss, Jeremy Hunt and Rishi Sunak. How pragmatic of the clearly very clever Mr Hunt. Was this his way of stopping that ‘runaway horse’ of the Six of Diamonds?

A not -quite love triangle.

When the UK economy shows signs of recovery, which it will, and always would have done, likely after Christmas- late March 2023 (and nothing is easier than to spook the markets, as we’ve all just witnessed) it will be attributed in retrospect to the ousting of Liz Truss, and to Rishi’s selection as Prime Minister.

Which is not to say that Rishi Sunak won’t make a good Prime Minister. He has high energy and I think is hardworking and well meaning, essentially benevolent. I personally like that about him. But when I looked at that prospect for him …then the Spades cards turned up.

Rishi has lots of Spades cards on his future timeline as PM. Here’s the thing. Spades is clever. Very. But can be narrow. Specialist. Is Rishi more than a clever operator and technocrat? He needs to be broader than that, more of a generalist, or else know how deploy the top talent, which is not to kept on a choke chain. These are dangerous times, not for any fault in Rishi Sunak and just because a card reader has drawn Spades cards, does not mean he may not do very well.

The technocrat thing is a concern, however, as flagged up through the lens of the cards, and there is today a perception, and a fear in some sections of the electorate that ‘the suits,’ ‘the money men’ are now promoted beyond their remit, and will now be running the whole show in plain sight.

Britain’s destiny is a matter that goes way deeper than the cold winds of the global economy. We need visionary leadership. We need a wise, humane but utterly resolute Home Secretary in defending our territorial integrity, and a courageous, supple and visionary Foreign Secretary, for all our sakes.

I had a call with my UK counterpart@JamesCleverly who has just been re-appointed to the new government of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Governments may change, but the support of our UK friends will remain unwavering for as long as it is needed for Ukraine to win

Back to the cards for the contest.

There was one big clue that Boris was at a disadvantage/would not proceed to a members vote. This was the appearance of The Joker, drawn upside down on Rishi’s line of cards. Why? Because Boris was the antagonist and Rishi perceived him as a threat to his chances until almost the last minute.

Time and again since 2016, I have drawn Boris as The Joker. But for all the buffoon jokes and for all his mistakes, make no mistake. Whatever the appearance of the Joker, this is a serious card. THE card of destiny. The only other card in the deck that can match the spirit, the particular genius and power of The Joker is the Ace of Spades with the Ace of Clubs the closest runner-up.

The Joker, drawn reversed on Rishi’s line was THE clue that the new PM would not be Boris. But I needed one more sign to feel sure about what I thought. I decided to pull more cards.

The cards are drawn blind and totally at random. Or so it appears. But this activity works on self-programming. One must trust that the mind will immediately start working on the question deep down, way below our level of awareness, and will then direct the reader to correctly select the necessary cards, triggered by unconscious physical signals from the central nervous system so that we choose this card but not that card but with no rationale, no conscious explanation of knowing why we do so.

I told myself, ‘show me a new Ace card for whichever one will be the new Prime Minister.’

On the third extra card, I drew an Ace for Rishi Sunak, the Ace of Hearts but no new Ace for Boris Johnson, while his existing Ace of Diamonds was behind him. I concluded from this that Boris would withdraw. It seems that he decided probably wisely, that it would serve no purpose to win the member’s vote if he could not also command substantially more than half of his own MP’s.

Why withdrawal rather than a defeat? The cards of defeat were missing. There was no 2 Spades, 3 Spades, 9 Spades, 10 Spades-and no Ace of Spades.

Boris Johnson chose to keep his powder dry. Perhaps to run again some other day.

By yesterday afternoon Penny Mordaunt had already been left behind in this contest. Where does it say so in the cards?

See that first card on Rishi’s row, the top row, the beautiful Queen of Hearts? That is Penny Mordaunt, a Pisces queen. Follow her gaze. Where is she looking?

Into the past or into empty space.

UPDATE

And now, even as I was writing this up, here we have it, 2:00 PM and the formal announcement. Rishi Sunak is our new PM in the UK.

The sacred chalice is passed.

Over to you, Mr Sunak. Many congratulations and good luck steering this most venerable ship Britannia away from the storms which are battering her, charting a course into brave new waters.

The lonely estate of high office, so hard to perform, so easy for others to criticize.

What else can we do but hope for the best.
